American Airlines Returns to Iceland With Daily Philadelphia Route

American Airlines is returning to Iceland with a new daily summer route between Keflavík International Airport and Philadelphia beginning May 27, 2027.

The airline will operate the route with a 196-seat Airbus A321neo, according to Isavia, giving Iceland travellers another direct link to a major US hub.

    What’s the Story?

    • Flights begin May 27, 2027 and operate daily during the summer season.
    • American Airlines plans to use a 196-seat Airbus A321neo.
    • Philadelphia provides onward connections to more than 100 destinations in the United States and beyond.

A return postponed by the pandemic

American Airlines previously flew between Keflavík and Dallas-Fort Worth beginning in 2018. The airline had also planned a Philadelphia route for 2020, but that expansion was abandoned as the pandemic disrupted international aviation.

The new service therefore represents both a return and a delayed route launch. Isavia says the Philadelphia connection strengthens Iceland’s access to North America, while American Airlines points to Philadelphia’s role as one of its growing connecting hubs.

The route enters an already highly competitive transatlantic market. Icelandair has continued to expand its US network, including a direct Miami service announced for 2025. Iceland’s location also makes aviation policy unusually important to the economy; in July, Iceland Review reported that the EU backed extending Iceland’s special aviation emissions exemption in part to preserve transatlantic competitiveness through Keflavík.

American Airlines has a much older Iceland connection as well. The Iceland Review archive records an American Airlines emergency landing at Keflavík in 2010, long before the carrier began scheduled Iceland service.
