Chairmen of The Left-Green Movement, The Independence Party, and The Progressive Party are meeting this morning at 9:30 to begin formal negotiations on the formation of a government, RÚV reports. Whether the negotiations are successful is expected to be known by the end of the week. The President has not given official authority to any party leader to form a government.
Two Left-Green Movement MPs have expressed opposition to the negotiations. Rósa Björk Brynjólfsdóttir is one of the two, and believes the negotiations will be “very difficult.”
Left-Green Movement Chairman Katrín Jakobsdóttir was interviewed about the decision to begin formal negotiations on the program Kastljós (Spotlight) last night. She stated “nothing has changed in respect to us being, in our opinion, the main opposition to The Independence Party in Icelandic politics and we want to apply ourselves to other forms of working,” adding “left policy, for me, does not depend on defining me based on The Independence Party – that I am so against The Independence Party. It is based on bringing another kind of vision to the table on how we can make our society better and then of course one has to dare to keep the big promises and be prepared to work with those who want to work together on that.”
Though Independence Party and Left-Green Movement policies overlap on some matters, for example investing in healthcare and staying out of the European Union, they are vastly different in other areas, such as taxes.
