Two Suspects Arrested Abroad in Kópavogur Homicide Case

Two people have been arrested abroad in connection with the homicide investigation on Vallarbraut in Kópavogur, police have confirmed.

The suspects were detained in two separate European countries and are being held there while Icelandic investigators work with Europol and foreign police. Eleven people have also been arrested in Iceland in connection with the case.

    What’s the Story?

    • Two suspects have been arrested in separate European countries in connection with the Kópavogur homicide.
    • Eleven people have been arrested in Iceland; two remain in remand custody here.
    • Police are working with Europol and foreign authorities, but say it is too early to say whether organised crime is involved.

    Investigation expands beyond Iceland

The investigation concerns the death of a Polish citizen who was critically injured following an assault at a home in Kársnes on Sunday. He was taken to Landspítali hospital and died later that day.

    E. Agnes Eide Kristínardóttir of the Capital Region Police told Vísir that investigators believe an edged weapon was used in the attack, although no such weapon has yet been recovered. Police have carried out searches at several properties and in vehicles.

Two suspects were arrested abroad, one in each of two European countries, and both have been remanded there. Icelandic police are receiving assistance from Europol and police in the countries concerned.

In Iceland, 11 people have been arrested during the investigation. Two suspects are currently being held on remand, while others have either been released or remain in police custody.

Police say the investigation remains at an early stage. They have not concluded whether the killing is connected to organised criminal activity.

The case is a material development in the investigation Iceland Review reported earlier this week, when several people were arrested after the fatal Kópavogur attack. For broader context, Iceland Review has also covered long-term homicide trends and police concerns about the growth of organised crime groups.
