Israeli ambassador Miryam Shomrat, who came to Iceland on Tuesday, has urged the Icelandic government to think twice before condemning Israel’s actions.
Shomrat met with Iceland’s Foreign Minister Valgerdur Sverrisdóttir in Reykjavík on Tuesday and was given a letter from the Icelandic government condemning Israel’s attacks on civilians in Beit Hanoun on 8 November.
According to Fréttabladid, Shomrat said that the Icelandic government focuses too much on the incident in Beit Hanoun, in which 18 civilians were killed, and has failed to take into consideration the bigger picture.
Shomrat said the attack on civilians had been a mistake and that the missiles had been aimed at Palestinian partisans who were dropping bombs on Israeli civilians.
The ambassador urged Icelanders to reconsider their stand on the Israel-Palestine conflict and to try to understand that Israel has a duty to take actions to secure the safety of its people, as reported in Fréttabladid.
