Katrín Jakobsdóttir, chairman of the Leftist-Green Movement has just received the President’s mandate to lead coalition talks with three other parties. Those parties are the Social Democratic Party, the Progressive Party and the Pirate Party.

Together, these four parties will have a 32 seat majority against a 31 seat opposition, same as the outgoing government. Katrín places emphasis on maintaining cohesion between the government and opposition and does not rule out involving more parties in the coalition.

Although talks have only recently begun, Katrín believes the potential government will focus on the larger issues, such as healthcare, education and transportation affairs. Climate issues and equality are also of particular interest to Katrín.

The President expects to hear from the party chairmen around the weekend. All parties are in agreement on working quickly, as the last coalition talks took nearly ten weeks. Katrín had taken part in some of those talks and claims that her experience will come in handy.
