Heavy rainfall made the first half of July the wettest on record in Reykjavík, according to meteorologist Trausti Jónsson.
A total of 65.6mm of rain was recorded in the Icelandic capital during the first half of the month, more than double the average for the same period between 1992 and 2020.

Contrasting Conditions
Beyond Reykjavík, Stykkishólmur in western Iceland is another location with a rainfall record of 66.6mm, measured during the first half of July.
Conditions were markedly different in the north. Akureyri recorded just 1.3mm during the same period, although this was not a record low.
Reykjavík also experienced below-average sunshine, with 58.4 hours recorded during the first half of the month, 27 hours fewer than the long-term average. Akureyri, by contrast, recorded 83.3 hours of sunshine, around eight hours above average.
