Heavy Rain Warning Throughout Country

Heavy rain, high water levels in rivers, and increased risk of landslides are of concern on Friday. The Icelandic Met Office has issued an Orange Alert for the Westfjords and a Yellow Alert for Breiðafjörður, Northwest Iceland, and Northeast Iceland.

Considerable rain can be expected in the Westfjords and Strandir areas and the Hvalá river in Ófeigsfjörður near Árneshreppur now measures above the 200-year flood threshold and is expected to rise as heavy precipitation continues. Heavy rain is also expected around Tröllskagi and water levels in rivers and streams throughout the region are expected to rise. This will lead to an increased risk of landslides and rocks falling from steep mountain slopes.

Heavy rain is also expected around Mýrdalsjökull glacier in South Iceland and the area south of Vatnajökull. Water levels in rivers and streams will rise in this area as well and travellers are encouraged to exercise an abundance of caution, particularly around unbridged rivers.
