Omicron Variant Accounts for 70% of New Cases

70% of Covid-19 cases diagnosed yesterday are of the Omicron strain, Kári Stefánsson, founder and CEO of deCODE genetics confirmed in an interview with RÚV. The rate of Omicron cases has more than doubled since last Sunday.

There has been a surge in Covid-19 cases for past few days in Iceland. Yesterday, 267 domestic cases were detected, and 51 at the border. On Monday, coronavirus cases in the country hit a record high of almost 300.

Due to the rapid spread of the virus, new infection prevention restrictions were introduced yesterday. They include a gathering limit of 20 persons and a 2-metre social distancing rule. The new rules will take effect at midnight.
