First COVID-19 Death at Iceland’s National Hospital

An Icelandic woman just over 70 died yesterday at Iceland’s National University Hospital in Reykjavík after contracting COVID-19. The woman, who had been chronically ill, is the first Icelandic resident to die as a result of COVID-19.

RÚV reports that three of the woman’s family members had the opportunity to say their goodbyes before she passed away. Two of the three had already contracted the virus. In a Facebook post, the woman’s son urged Icelanders to abide by authorities’ regulations to slow the spread of the virus.

An Australian tourist who had contracted coronavirus died last week in Húsavík, North Iceland. A preliminary autopsy pointed to COVID-19 as the likely cause of death.
