Youth Association of Iceland celebrates 100th anniversary

The Youth Association of Iceland’s (UMFÍ) largest national sports tournament opened in the sports field in Reykjavík’s suburb of Kópavogur yesterday, which coincides with a celebration of UMFÍ’s 100th anniversary.

The tournament is not only for Icelandic youth. Ármann J. Lárusson, 75, has competed in every national tournament since 1949 and participates for the 19th time this year, Fréttabladid reports.

“This time I’ll compete in bridge,” Lárusson said. “When I was young I competed in wrestling and athletics.” Lárusson was the best wrestler in Iceland in his youth, winning the national wrestling tournament 14 years in a row between 1954 and 1967.
