Young socialists urge authorities to stop whaling

Iceland’s Young Socialists, the youth movement within the Social Democratic Alliance Party, have issues a press release in which they urge Icelandic authorities to stop commercial whaling, as it is likely to damage Iceland’s image substantially in the international arena. Morgunbladid online reports.

The press release states that Young Socialists do not consider whaling to be a private issue for Iceland and wish for decisions on whaling to be taken in collaboration with other nations.

The risk of extinction for various whale species has not been absolutely determined and the damage they cause within Iceland’s fishing zone is limited. Consequently greater interests are sacrificed for lesser through the perpetration of whaling.

Five fin whales have so far been caught by Icelandic whalers. The set quota for the year is nine fin whales.
