Young Driver Speeds on Playground, Car Confiscated

Police caught a young driver speeding on the playground outside Austurbaejarskóli elementary school in Reykjavík yesterday and confiscated the vehicle he was driving, a sports car, recommending that it never be returned to him.

Police will keep the sports car until the courts reach a conclusion. “We take such violations very seriously and the capital region police are ambitious about uprooting such activities,” Superintendent Kristján Ólafur Gudnason told Morgunbladid.

The driver is being charged with jeopardizing the life and health of others. Illegal substances were also found in his car and he is suspected of driving under the influence of drugs.

There were not many children on the playground because a class had just started when the car appeared. But according to principal Gudumundur Sighvatsson one class had been playing outside at the time.

“The kids were quick to run away from the car and said that it had just suddenly driven in there,” Sighvatsson said, adding that he has never heard of an incident like this before and that he is now considering fencing off the playground. “I’m still in shock.”
