Yoko Ono Lights Peace Tower Friday

The Imagine Peace Tower in Viðey island will be illuminated Friday, October 9, the day John Lennon would have turned 75, Vísir reports. A special program begins at 5:30 pm and concludes at 9:30 pm. According to a press release from the City of Reykjavík, Yoko Ono will offer free ferry rides to the island, with departures from Skarfabakki, Reykjavík, between 5:30 pm and 7:20 pm. There will be free bus rides between Hlemmur and Skarfabakki and back.

The program begins in Viðeyjarnaust at 5:30 pm with a family workshop, organized by the Reykjavík Art Museum. At 6:00 pm, a guided tour of Viðey will be offered, covering population and history of the island. At 6:30 pm, singer Ólöf Arnalds will entertain, and at 7:45 pm, the Reykjavík Men’s Choir will perform by the Peace Tower, which will be illuminated at 8:00 pm. Entertainment will be in the hands of the band Friends 4 Ever from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Felix Bergsson directs the pogram. Refreshments will be sold in a tent outside Viðeyjarnaust and Viðeyjarstofa.

The Imagine Peace Tower is lit annually on John Lennon’s birthday and shines every night through December 8, the day of his death.
