World’s Largest Aircraft to Keflavík Tonight

The world’s largest cargo aircraft, the six-engine Antonov An- 225, is expected in Keflavík International Airport tonight, from Leipzig, Germany, Vísir reports. According to flightradar24.com, its scheduled arrival is at 8:45 pm. The aircraft is on a week-long flight schedule from is home base in Kiev, Ukraine, to Chile.

It will stop in Keflavík for two hours to refuel, before taking off for Newfoundland.

The aircraft, designed in the Soviet Union in the 1980s to transport the Buran spacecraft, is both the longest and heaviest ever built, 84 m (275 ft) long, with a wingspan of 88 m (290 ft). It consumes 16 tons of fuel per hour and has a total of 32 wheels. The last time it landed in Iceland was in 2014.
