Icelander Audunn Jónsson took home the gold medal after winning the world championship in power-lifting in Norway on Saturday.

As Jónsson returned with the gold medal yesterday, he was warmly welcomed by his supporters from Kópavogur, his hometown in southwest Iceland, Morgunbladid reports.

Major of Kópavogur, Gunnar Birgisson, was among Jónsson’s supporters who greeted him at the airport when the champion arrived from Stavanger, Norway yesterday.

Jónsson was the strongest of competitors in the 125-kilo category. During the world championship in power-lifting he lifted in total 1,040 kilos.
