A new water pipe was established between the Icelandic mainland in Bakkafjara and the Westman Islands, off Iceland’s southwestern coast, yesterday. The water pipe is about 12 kilometers long and is the longest water pipe in the world which lies on an ocean floor.
The water pipe was dragged from the freighter Henry P. Lading up to the beach of Bakkafjara and was kept afloat with special floating kegs while it was fastened on the beach, Fréttabladid reports.
Then the kegs were removed and the water pipe made sink to the bottom. The other end of the water pipe was fastened on Landeyjasandur beach in the Westman Islands yesterday morning. The project was scheduled to be completed today.
Danish company JD-Contractor A/S (and NTK as a subcontractor) which also provided the Westman Islands with the first water pipe 40 years ago, is in charge of the project.
