Works of 20th century landscape painters on display

The ASÍ Art Museum summer exhibition opens next weekend in Reykjavík, offering visitors the chance to view the works of two of Iceland’s most important 20th century landscape painters: Jón Stefánsson and Jóhannes S. Kjarval.

The paintings on display include the famous “Mountain Milk” (pictured) by Kjarval, painted in 1941. “‘Mountain Milk’ is one of the great icons of Icelandic art history. The painting shows us a scene from Thingvellir [national park] in an idealized, unbreakable calm,” as described in an ASÍ press release.

The summer exhibition also features works by contemporary artists Birgir Andrésson, whose works are inspired by Iceland’s cultural heritage, Gudrún Kristjánsdóttir, who approaches Icelandic landscape in an original way, and Anna Eyjólfsdóttir, who uses the architecture of the museum itself for her sculpture.

The exhibition is open until August 26 and admission is free.
