Working Conditions in Tunnel Investigated

The Administration of Occupational Safety and Health visited the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnel, which is currently under construction, yesterday after complaints about poor working conditions, ruv.is reports.

Last weekend, workers hit an aquifer, which has been spewing out 250 to 300 liters of water per second of 46°C (115°F) hot water into the tunnel.

Cold water had to be sprayed on the workers as they worked in the hot conditions in the tunnel and workers have sought medical attention.

The administration has not yet released its conclusions about conditions in the tunnel.
