Working conditions at Kárahnjúkar to be improved

A tunnel at Kárahnjúkar dam in Iceland’s eastern highlands was closed yesterday due to the lack of air conditioning. Sigurdur Arnalds, spokesman for the dam, announced the working conditions at Kárahnjúkar would be improved.

According to, Arnalds said cleaning and eating facilities would be improved, following news of 40 workers falling ill after consuming food and drink from open containers inside the tunnels and not being able to wash their hands.

The operations at Kárahnjúkar dam are three months behind schedule. Arnalds said the delay is mostly due to extensive work on finishing the construction of the tunnels. He said he did not believe that closing down a 40-kilometer stretch of a tunnel yesterday would cause much more of a delay.
