Wood Workshop in West Iceland Destroyed in Fire

Significant damage was caused to the facilities of Trésmiðja Akraness, the wood workshop in Akranes in West Iceland, yesterday evening. Fire came up in the vacant building and it had almost burned to the ground before the fire could be extinguished.

Passers by noticed the fire and alerted the local fire brigade at 9 pm. All available firefighters, 50 persons, were called to the scene, along with search and rescue, visir.is reports.

When the extent of the fire became clear, firefighters placed the main emphasis on protecting the facilities of other companies in the same building, which appears to have been successful.

Streets in Akranes were closed during the operations as a lot of smoke drifted across the town. The fire was extinguished shortly before midnight but firefighters kept watch through the night.
