Won But Still Lost

The Icelandic handball team beat Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia by six goals on Sunday in the teams’ play-off for a slot at the World Championships. Despite a good comeback since the last match of the two teams the six goals could not undo the humiliating defeat by eight goals in the previous match. FYR Macedonia moves on to the World Championships; Iceland does not.

The team had a rocky road ahead, since they had to beat Macedonia by eight goals or more to win the play-off. But the team showed what they are made of, trying their best from the get-go, and were in the lead the entire time. mbl.is reports.

But poor offence and a lot of easy goal opportunities that weren’t used caused the team the extra goals that they needed for victory.

This is the first time since 1999 that the men’s team won’t be going to the finals at a big competition.
