Women’s Day Off Well Attended

Thousands of people, mostly women, convened on Austurvöllur square, downtown Reykjavík, at 3:15 pm today to demand equal pay for women and men for the same kind of work.

Unions and women’s rights organizations planned the event and encouraged women to leave their workplaces at 2:38, since compared to men’s earnings, women work for free after that hour.

The event was very well attended, speeches were given, songs were sung, and a new twist to the Viking clap, made famous by football fans, was used to shout “Út” or “Out” to the gender pay gap, discrimination and violence against women.
