Doctors at the Icelandic Cancer Society did not inform women of ruptured silicone implants having been detected in their breasts when they came in for a standard mammogram, rúv.is reports.

The working rule was that only women who were experiencing symptoms and had booked an appointment specifically to check on them were informed, weekly newspaper Fréttatíminn reports today.
A woman who booked a mammogram has filed a complaint to the Directorate of Health after realizing that a doctor detected leaking silicon in her muscle in 2008 and failed to inform her.
Since the case of the faulty PIP implants came about, the Cancer Society’s working methods have been changed.
According to the society’s chief of staff, Kristján Sigurðsson, until then, a leak from legally made silicone implants was not considered a health threat.
