Women Call for End to Sexual Violence

Dozens of women have been sharing their experiences with sexual violence on the Facebook group Beauty tips! in recent days, using the hashtags #þöggun (‘suppression’) and #konurtala (‘women speak’). The group, which is closed as well as secret, meaning that an invite from a group member, as well as administrative approval, is required to join, has around 25,000 members, Vísir reports.

Many of the women who have been sharing their experiences have been doing so for the first time. One of the women, Andrea Sóleyjar og Björgvinsdóttir, who had previously shared her story in Kvennablaðið, wrote about the burden of shame which survivors of sexual violence often feel. “I was very ashamed for having landed in such a situation and had very little self-esteem,” revealed Andrea, who was raped as a teenager.

Andrea is among women calling for a revolution on attitudes towards sexual violence. “We should not accept that sexual violence exists,” she stressed.

Beauty tips! was founded last year by Áslaug María Agnarsdóttir and became immensely popular. Áslaug María told Kjarninn last December that she routinely receives hundreds of membership requests in a single day. Only women are allowed to be a part of the group, but men, as well as people of other gender-identities, can petition to join.
