Women of Breiðablik: Icelandic Football Champions

Breiðablik from Kópavogur became Icelandic national champion in women’s football last night—winning the title for the first time in ten years, RÚV reports. The team defeated Þór/KA 2-1 in Akureyri in the division’s next to last round. As a result, Breiðablik now has 47 points, leading Stjarnan from Garðabær by four points—an unbeatable lead.

Lillý Rut Hlynsdóttir scored for Þór/KA during the first half, but Telma Hjaltalín Þrastardóttir scored for Breiðablik at the beginning of the second half. The victory goal was made by Fanndís Friðriksdóttir 62 minutes into the game.

Breiðablik’s last game is in Kópavogur against ÍBV from Vestmannaeyjar, September 12 at 4 pm.

Stjarnan is guaranteed second place.
