Women’s refuge in demand

A record number of 92 women and 74 children stayed at the refuge for abused women, Kvennaathvarf, in 2005, compared to 88 women and 55 children the year before. If each day each woman or child spends in the refuge is tallied, the total of such days in 2005 was 2,422, compared to 1,568 in 2004. This difference is partly because some women had to spend a considerably long period of time there and partly because more children stayed at the refuge. Phone calls to the emergency number and interviews with abused women who did not feel the need to stay at the shelter also increased from the previous year.

Staff from the refuge say that increased discussion around sexual violence and potential solutions may account in part for the increase in visits.
