Woman Retrieved from Ocean, Flown to Hospital

A foreign tourist, a woman in her late forties, fell into the ocean by Kirkjufjara beach by Dyrhólaey promontory in South Iceland shortly before 1 pm today.

The woman was found near the location where the accident occurred, at around 2 pm and was taken by helicopter to Landspítali hospital in Reykjavík. Her condition is unknown, Vísir reports.

The woman’s husband and two children also fell into the ocean but managed to reach land on their own. They are unharmed but are being taken by ambulance to Reykjavík.

After receiving many notifications about a group of people falling into the ocean, all available police officers and search and rescue volunteers in the region were called out, along with a helicopter and rescue vessel from the Icelandic Coast Guard.

The search conditions were difficult due to the high surf on the beach. Kirkjufjara and the adjacent Reynisfjara are popular tourist destinations but the beaches can be extremely dangerous.

Two years ago, three tourists at Kirkjufjara were swept into the ocean but were rescued in the last minute. About a decade ago, an American woman died there. Last year a man drowned in the ocean by Reynisfjara, ruv.is reports.
