Woman in ICU after Fire in West Iceland

A woman suffered serious injuries when she jumped out of a window on the second floor of a three-story house in Borgarnes, west Iceland, after it caught fire last night. She is currently being cared for at the ICU of the Landspítali, national hospital, in Reykjavík.

The woman was immediately taken by ambulance to Reykjavík and a Coast Guard helicopter was called out too. The helicopter caught up with the ambulance once it had exited the Hvalfjörður tunnel and the woman was flown the last stretch of the way, visir.is reports.

When firefighters arrived to the scene in Borgarnes flames extended out both ridges of the house, which is made from timber and is one of the town’s oldest buildings. The fire was quickly extinguished but the house is severely damaged.

Further details of the woman’s condition have not been revealed. Other inhabitants managed to get out of the house unharmed. The police are investigating the origin of the fire.
