An Icelandic woman has been granted a divorce from her husband by an order from the Reykjavík District Court after not having met him since 1976. According to mbl.is, the woman has not been able to track down her husband, who is British, in spite of repeated efforts. She is not sure whether the man is still alive.
Reykjavík District Court.
The woman wed her husband on July 21, 1975 in London. A year later she moved alone to Iceland, and since then she has neither met her husband nor heard from him.
The British Embassy in Iceland said that it was not able to divulge information on individuals. The woman also contacted the Salvation Army in the U.K. but even though the organization has helped find missing relatives it does not help find missing spouses. Finally the woman tried the web page 192.com, which helps find missing individuals. None of these efforts helped and therefore the woman felt compelled to go to court.
She had tried to get a divorce earlier through similar means, but had misspelled her husband’s name causing the divorce to fall through. She claimed that the marriage had only been perfunctory.
