Woman gives birth to surprise baby

A 43-year-old Icelandic woman gave birth to a baby girl yesterday morning on her bathroom floor, without knowing she was pregnant. Mother and daughter are in good health.

Ágústa Kristófersdóttir had bypass surgery to reduce her stomach last summer and lost about 30 kilos as a consequence. Since then she has been under the constant surveillance of doctors, but no one suspected she was pregnant. RÚV reports.

Kristófersdóttir worked at the counter at Bónus supermarket until 7 pm on Tuesday night, but did not feel any symptoms except for a slight backache. When she came home she had dinner and went to sleep as normal.

When Kristófersdóttir went into the bathroom the next morning she felt as if she had menstrual pains. But as she had stopped having her period, she thought the pains were related to the surgery. “The next thing I knew is that I was holding a baby in my arms,” she said.

Kristófersdóttir had been told by doctors that she would feel “air bubbles” in her stomach after the surgery, so that is what she thought was happening when the baby was kicking. Her abdomen was enlarged but she thought that was related to the surgery as well.

The parents of the surprise baby girl told RÚV that they were still taken aback by the latest addition to their family. They also have a grown-up daughter.
