A woman who was arrested on Laugavegur in downtown Reykjavík on July 7 was handed a 30-day suspended prison sentence at Reykjavík District Court yesterday for spitting at the police officer who arrested her.

The woman confessed immediately. She does not have a previous record, Morgunblaðið reports.

The arrest was considered brutal and the affair garnered widespread attention as a video of it went viral. The police officer is facing charges for assault and violating the police’s work code.

The jury stated that the courts consider violations against the police to be serious and that the events that occurred after the woman spat on the officer did not affect the verdict.
