Woman Arrested on Suspicion of Manslaughter

A woman was arrested in Hafnarfjörður, outside Reykjavík yesterday, on suspicion of having stabbed her partner in the chest, causing his death. She was brought before a judge at Reykjanes District Court and was handed a custody sentence valid until February 23.

The police were notified of a person’s death in a Hafnarfjörður apartment complex at around 3 pm yesterday. When they arrived at the scene, they found the woman, who was born in 1959, alone in the apartment with her dead partner, who was born in 1974, Vísir reports.

The victim had one stab wound in the left side of his chest and was pronounced dead upon the police’s arrival. Neither the man nor the woman have a history with the police.

Employees of the police’s forensics department investigated the crime scene yesterday. The investigation is in the initial stages and no details have been released. The cause of death has not been confirmed, superintendent Kristján Ingi Kristjánsson at the Reykjavík Metropolitan Police pointed out.

This is the first manslaughter case in Iceland this year. Last year, one such case occurred when a young man was arrested on suspicion of strangling his wife in their home in Reykjavík. A charge has yet to be issued in the case.
