Winter Storm Today

By Iceland Review

After the recent gentle weather, it is due to get wintry over parts of Iceland today—though nowhere near as stormy as the hurricane force winds that struck ten days ago, the duty meteorologist assures RÚV.

The heavy weather is already affecting Snæfellsnes, Breiðafjörður, the West Fjords, the Strandir region and Northwest Iceland. The south of the country can also expect storm force winds of around 20 meters per second in the afternoon.

North Iceland is experiencing snowfall today, while the south and east of the country have temperatures above freezing—meaning rain or sleet.

Travelers are strongly advised to check weather and road conditions before setting off—especially if they plan to drive mountain roads in the north or east. Many roads around the whole country are slippery and some mountain roads are impassible.

Conditions can be monitored on road.is and vedur.is.

Talk of weather is prompting people to start thinking about a white Christmas, and the Met Office is only too happy to report that most parts of Iceland should see some fresh snowfall in the next week—however, differing conditions across the country could see it disappear again in some places before the Big Day.
