Winter Storm is Here

Weather conditions are rapidly deteriorating in the southwest corner of the country, RÚV reports. Police ask residents to use bus services as much as possible and avoid leaving home in cars that are not well equipped for winter driving. The worst weather is expected in the capital area after 9 am and winds will not die down until after 2 pm.

High winds, accompanied with drifting snow and increasing snow accumulation, will make traveling difficult. The weather will move across the country, the worst expected in the west and in the West Fjords around noon and mid-day in the north.

A team of 120 rescue workers is on standby in the Greater Reykjavík Area since last night, but no emergency calls had been received at 8 am.

Stætó has canceled bus service between Reykjavík and Akureyri, and some other service as well. Check their website for updates. Air Iceland (Flugfélag Íslands) flights have been canceled this morning, but the status will be reevaluated at 11:05 am.

School has been canceled in several towns in the west part of the country.
