The second annual winter sports festival Éljagangur (February 9-12) in Akureyri, north Iceland, was formally launched by Mayor Eiríkur Björn Björgvinsson at a ceremony on the town square Ráðhústorg on Thursday.

As usual, a giant snowman adorns the square at this time of year and he was given new attire for the occasion, and at the festival’s launch snowboarders and ice hockey players, along with representatives from the town council, demonstrated their skills.
The festival’s program includes a flashlight march in Mt. Hlíðarfjall, where the local ski resort is based—an award will be presented to the participant carrying the most original light—a ski-doo race and fireworks show.
