Winter Lights Festival Begins

The annual Reykjavík Winter Lights Festival begins today.

The main objective of the festival “is to illuminate the dramatic darkness of winter with a collection of sparkling events, which both celebrate and emphasize the beauty of Reykjavík City. To accentuate further the extraordinary contrasts of light presented during winter, a number of quality light-art installations will be exhibited, illuminating spectacularly some of the city’s most prominent buildings and public spaces, consequently enabling festival guests to experience the city from a new and exciting perspective,” as stated on the festival’s website.

The festival opens at 19:30 with a light installation by Marcos Zotes at Hallgrímskirkja cathedral.

The festival includes several themed events such as Museum Night, where entry to over 40 museums in the capital will be free on Friday from 8 pm to midnight. Free bus services will also run.

Saturday night is Pool Night where free entry will be offered to the capital’s swimming pools. A Pool Night Quiz will also be part of the program for the first time.

For more information visit the festival’s website. The program is available here.
