Winter is Coming, Roads are Closing

More than 15 highlands roads have been closed for good for the winter, because of snow, including Road 570, Jökulháls between Arnarstapi and Ólafsvík on Snæfellsnes peninsula, and Road F66, across Kollafjarðarheiði in the West Fjords.

Road 550 through Kaldidalur has been closed, as has Road F578 across Arnarvatnsheiði in West Iceland, and the two main roads over the highlands connecting South and North Iceland: Road 35 across Kjölur and Road 26 across Sprengisandur.

Road 82 across Lágheiði between Ólafsfjörður and Skagafjörður (the Fljót region) has now been closed, as has Road F862 from Dettifoss waterfall northwards to Ásbyrgi and Öxarfjörður.

The roads to Landmannalaugar, both Fjallabak roads, F210 and F208, have also been closed for the winter.

When do the highland roads open again? It depends on how much snow will fall this winter but mid-June is the normal opening time for highland roads.
