Winter Has Arrived in Reykjavík

The first snow this winter fell in the capital region last night. Police reported nine traffic accidents, most of which were caused by slippery roads. No one was harmed. Road conditions are still slippery in the southwestern region and in other parts of the country.

In east Iceland, some mountain roads are impassible due to snowfall, according to information from the Public Roads Administration, mbl.is reports.

Snowfall was already reported in Akureyri, north Iceland, at the end of September. The Strandir region in the eastern West Fjords also saw early snowfall.

Meteorologist Einar Sveinbjörnsson told ruv.is that the weather was unusually unstable for that time of year.
