The forecast calls for continued cold weather over Iceland this week.
There will be bright weather with nighttime frost over the south, but snow and temperatures generally below freezing in the north.
“So, we see that winter is not going to release its grip just yet, as the northerly wind will persist this week, bringing the associated chill,” says the regular meteorologists’ report from the Icelandic Met Office. On the positive side, it looks like the weather will be generally good over Easter, for those who wrap up warm.
Today calls for easterly and northeasterly winds of 8-15 meters per second in the north, and gentler westerly wind elsewhere. Temperature 1-10°C. It will be cloudy and snow or rain in most places, but becoming drier and brighter in the south this afternoon. Localized sleet and snow will continue in the north later on.
The forecast for the country over the coming days, according to the Met Office, looks like this:
Wednesday
Northerly and northeasterly wind, 5-10 meters per second. A little hail and frost, generally 0 to -5°C. Dry and bright in the southwest and west of the country. Daytime temperature rising to a maximum of 5°C.
Maundy Thursday
Easterly 8-13 meters per second in the south and west, with still weather in the northeast. Isolated snow or sleet showers in the south and dry in the north. Similar temperatures to Wednesday.
Good Friday
Northerly 8-13 meters per second and hail or snow in the north and east. Light cloud cover elsewhere. Generally cold.
Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday
Northerly and northeasterly, 5-10 meters per second and hail in the north and the east, mostly bright weather elsewhere. Continuing low temperatures.
Easter Monday
Windy in the south with increasing temperatures and precipitation in the south and west.
Iceland celebrates the first day of summer next Thursday, the 20th, and traditionally people expect the weather to turn from winter to spring with lightning speed thereafter. But, of course, the Icelandic weather is full of surprises…
