With the Christmas jovialities now over, visitors and locals alike are looking forward to the next big celebration in Iceland – bonfires on New Year’s Night!
Locations for the upcoming áramótabrennur, or New Year’s Eve bonfires, have been revealed, organised by the user, misspucker, on Reddit .
There will be a total of ten bonfire events happening in the capital city. The largest will be at Gufunes near Gufunesbær, and Geirsnef. However, should the winds exceed 10m/s, the bonfires will be postponed. A decision will be made at noon on New Year’s eve.
Should events go according to plan, you can expect the bonfires to be lit around the Capital Region between 8.30 PM and 9 PM.
You can find the full list of bonfires happening in the Capital Region on reykjavik.is.
In the Westfjords, there will be a bonfire lit at Ísafjörður, beginning at 8.30 PM.

In South Iceland, visitors can visit bonfires in Selfoss and Stokkseyri, both of which begin at 5 PM, and in Eyrarbakki, which kicks off at 8 PM.
In North Iceland, a huge pyre will be lit in the region’s largest town, Akureyri, at 8.30 PM, closeby to Akureyri Golf Course.
Those in East Iceland will have their choice of bonfires to choose from; Breiðdalsvík, Stöðvarfjörður, Fáskrúðsfjörður, Reyðfarfjörður, Eskifjörður and Norðurfjörður will all be holding events at 5 PM.
Organisers note that guests are not permitted to set off their own fireworks at any of these events, though sparklers and torches are allowed.
