Where is the Luck?

“Where is all the luck embedded in our mascot? Perhaps we should find ourselves another kind of animal to bring luck to the team,” one of the Ísafjördur basketball team’s most loyal fans told dv.is.

Polar bears have been the club’s mascot for a number of years but now a change might have to take place. According to the anonymous source, the supporters of the club are starting to call for action because of the number of polar bear killings, the most recent case being earlier this week at Hornstrandir, located close to the town.

On the KFÍ website, the matter is currently under discussion. “They hate to see the carcass of a bloody mascot in the evening news,” is said of KFÍ’s supporters. Either adequate conditions will be provided in order to receive and treat these animals in a humane manner or the mascot might need to be changed; the latest occurrence taking place almost in the club’s backyard. “Perhaps the club should choose the Arctic Fox as its new mascot?” a supporter asks on the website. “At least it is preserved here in its natural habitat.”

The polar bear killings have already proved difficult for the club. They have been forced to cancel the appearance of an actor in a polar bear suit who was to travel from the capital and entertain kids at KFÍ’s upcoming annual basketball camp. It it simply wasn’t considered safe.
