What Are Icelanders Reading­?

Nine out of ten books on last week’s best seller list are newly published books by Icelandic writers.

At the top of the list is Sogið, the latest crime novel by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir. Number two is also a brand new crime novel, Þýska húsið, by Arnaldur Indriðason.

Number three is Mamma klikk, fiction for young adults by actor/ writer Gunnar Helgason. The children’s book Þín eigin goðsaga by Ævar Þór Benediktsson is in fourth place.

Fifth is Útkall í hamfarasjó, non-fiction about a sinking ship, by Óttar Sveinsson. Sixth is a book about World War II in Iceland, Stríðsárin 1938 – 1945, by Páll Baldvin Baldvinsson. Seventh is Stóri skjálfti, a novel by Auður Jónsdóttir.

Café Sigrún, a book about health food, by Sigrún Þorsteinsdóttir is in eight place. Number nine is Leynigarðurinn, or Secret Garden: An Inky Treasure Hunt and Colouring Book by Johanna Basford from Scotland. Number ten is Vísindabók Villa: Geimurinn og geimferðir by Vilhelm Anton Jónsson and Sævar Helgi Bragason, a book of wisdom for children and young adults.
