Westman Islands to Reduce Puffin Hunting

The town council of the Westman Islands has decided to shorten the puffin hunting period in reaction to poor nesting for the past few years. This year, puffin hunting will be allowed between July 10 and July 31.

The period may, however, be extended, Fréttabladid reports.

Few puffin chicks have hatched in the Westman Islands for a few years now. The main reason is lack of sand eels which is the primary source of nutrition for puffin chicks the first weeks after they hatch.

Some scientists believe that warming ocean currents are causing lack of sand eels in the ocean around the Westman Islands. Puffin meat is a local delicacy.
