Westman Islands Ferry Herjólfur Sails to Thorlákshöfn

Herjólfur will be sailing between the Westman Islands and its former harbor Thorlákshöfn today and the coming days, visir.is reports. In the past few days, the ferry has not been able to sail to its new harbor at Landeyjahöfn because of the tides.

Landeyjahöfn harbor shows no signs of becoming shallower, according to yesterday’s measurements, and pumping will not commence for a few days. In order to be able to pump, the waves can’t be more than a meter high.

Yesterday, representatives of the Icelandic Road Administration (ICERA) and the municipality of Ölfus held a meeting regarding the future of Thorlákshöfn as a reserve harbor for Herjólfur. Until now, when faced with the crisis, ICERA had shown no interest in discussions of that sort.
