Westfjords accept oil refinery

The local authority of Vesturbyggd municipality in the southern Westfjords agreed at a meeting on Wednesday to amend the current regional organization to permit the construction of an oil refinery by Arnarfjördur fjord.

A will declaration on the purchase of land currently owned by the farm Hvesta by Arnarfjördur for the oil refinery has been submitted, ruv.is reports.

Wednesday’s meeting was the first time that the members of the local authority met after returning from their summer vacations. During that time, the company Icelandic Hi-Tech Industry (Íslenskur hátaekniidnadur) had submitted a request regarding constructing the oil refinery in the region.

Preliminary research to determine whether such a project is suited for the area will end in September and after that the project will go through an environmental evaluation.

If everything goes according to plan, an oil refinery will be constructed by Arnarfjördur in a few years time.
