A young asylum seeker who snuck aboard the Norraena ferry headed for Iceland in September has run away. According to the Directorate of Immigration, the teenager left Iceland as a stowaway on the transport vessel Helgafell which recently set off for the UK.

Upon arrival to Iceland the boy claimed to be a 15-year-old Western Saharan citizen. He applied for asylum in Iceland but his affairs are now in the hands of British authorities. According to ruv.is, he didn’t seem particularly interested in living in Iceland.
He had tried to sneak aboard a ship headed for Canada on an earlier occasion but was caught. Afterwards he was sent to Studlar, a home for troubled teenagers, and later to the guesthouse Fitjar in the Reykjanesbaer municipality.
The Directorate of Immigration states that cases surface regularly in Iceland where asylum seekers try to leave the country by sneaking aboard ships.
