West Nordic Festival in Reykjavík

A new festival, “New Destinations”, celebrating the art, culture and business of the “islands to the north” kicks off in Reykjavík tomorrow.

The name of the festival “refers to the way forward; where are Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland headed and where do our common interests lie?” according to a press release.

A special film program with Faroese filmmaker duo Rammatik will be held at Bíó Paradís at 8 pm tonight. A Q&A session will follow the screening of The Cycle, a series of experimental short films that “embrace and discover movement through camera.” Also at 8 pm, a concert with Freyja i Norden will take place at the Nordic House.

The festival officially opens at 5 pm tomorrow. Other events include a food festival at the harbor from 12 pm to 4 pm on Saturday.

The hope is that the event will become a regular addition to the Nordic festival calendar and travel between Greenland, the Faroe Islands and Iceland introducing art, culture and business projects from the respective countries.

The festival runs through September 9 and will close with a classical music concert in Vatnsmýri (the wetland area which lies in front of the Nordic House) with Faroese violinists Øssur and Ruri Boek.

For more information visit the festival on Facebook or the website of the Nordic House.
