West Fjords Fires to Cost ISK 7 Million

The fires which have been burning in the Súðavík district in the West Fjords since August 2 are likely to cost the district ISK 7 million (USD 58,500, EUR 47,500), a significant amount for the small community, according to the head of the local council.

Close to sixty firefighters have been battling the flames which have now burnt 10 hectares of land, visir.is reports.

Rain and less wind over the weekend helped contain the fires.

Head of the local council at Súðavík, Ómar Már Jónsson, says the next step will be to find out what happened and to examine the cost of the operation.

“First, we want to find out what happened there. There is reason to believe that someone lit the fire,” says Ómar Már.

“I think the cost will be ISK 7 million. This is of course a significant burden for a small municipality with an internal revenue of just ISK 70 million,” he concluded.
