Web Host Breakdown Impacts Icelandic Businesses

Web hosting company 1984 Ltd. experienced a system breakdown yesterday, affecting thousands of individual Icelanders and many businesses who rely on their services, mbl.is reports. The cause of the breakdown is unknown.

“This breakdown was so unusual and tremendous that we sat in a meeting with the best experts in the country in these issues and watched our equipment die. Everyone was just stumped and had no idea what happened. People agreed they had never seen something like this fixed before,” stated Mörður Ingólfsson, CEO of web hosting company 1984.

“What happened was that there were malfunctions related to data storage and they were so serious that all of our main system went down, more or less.”

The breakdown has affected all of 1984’s customers, who number a few thousand. “We host a very big part of Icelander’s emails and are very aware of our responsibility and have always taken care to have a copy of everything,” added Mörður.

Though it is still unknown what caused the failure, Mörður stated a security expert considers it highly unlikely to be a cyber-attack. “We have always been accustomed to having very high-quality hardware. It is not known whether this was a hardware malfunction or a software malfunction and it’s not certain it will ever be known, only time will tell,” added Mörður.

An announcement on 1984’s website asks for customers to bear with the company while it tackles the “great challenge,” assuring the group is “not catching a shut eye until we have a clear picture of what can be done.”
