Weather Warning: Storm and Swelling Rivers

The Icelandic Met Office has issued a weather warning.

Due to heavy rainfall during the next 24 hours, rivers are expected to rise from the southern part of the West Fjords to Eyjafjallajökull. There is an increased risk of landslides.

A storm is expected (wind of more than 20 meters/second) in the central highlands today, and also in the South and West tonight and through tomorrow morning.

Right now, according to RÚV, swelling rivers are mainly a problem in mountain areas, and runoff is particularly heavy in the Snæfellsjökull area in West Iceland. Residents in places like Ólafsvík should be on the alert.

Swelling rivers could be a problem in the South and East tomorrow.

The first part of the week, we’re seeing a series of strong low pressure systems passing over the country. (Brings back memories from last winter, doesn’t? We haven’t missed them at all.)
